FAQ

  • What is a doula?
A doula is a woman who assists mothers and their partners through pregnancy, labor, delivery, and into the postpartum (after birth) period. A doula may help educate a woman about labor and common procedures, recommend resources including additional support, health specialists, books, videos, websites, ect. During labor a doula may recommend position changes, and pain relief techniques, she may massage and physically support the mother, enhancing and assisting the fathers role as needed.

A doula may help form a birth plan, and help the mother communicate her preferences to medical personnel. She may inform the mother of questions likely to be asked of her and coach her in tactful responses. She may help remind a mother of things learned in birthing classes or discussed previously.

A doula does not provide medical assistance or advice, or perform exams, she does not offer any advice for parental decisions, she does not speak for the mother or partner.

In short a doula enhances comfort, communication, and education.
